Survey Reveals Parents' Top Concerns for Young Adult Children: Lack of Savings, Income, and Unhealthy Lifestyle Top List of Parents' Concerns for
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Business Wire EON) April 8, 2008 -- "I believe the YesYouCan survey findings point to a bigger issue -- parents are concerned that their children are not motivated to achieve their goals and dreams," said Jack Jonathan, co-author of Yes, You Can... Reach Your Goals and Achieve Your Dreams, from Stowers Innovations, Inc.
"But, parents don't need to be afraid their children won't reach their goals," said co-author Jim Stowers. "If young adults want to be successful, with determination they can do more than they think is possible. They will never have more time left in their life than they do right now."
Stowers and Jonathan offer three questions for parents to raise when talking to their young adult about their career path.
Who is going to take care of you in a time of need?
Take time to talk with your young adult about concerns for the future. They may not realize that you had similar experiences.
When have you ever aggressively pursued a goal until you reached it?
Offer to assist your young adult to articulate current goals and dreams. Offer to help them create a career path to achieve their dreams.
When were you able to turn a setback into an opportunity?
Share with your young person a story about a setback you were able to overcome. Be there for your young adult to help them turn current setbacks into successes.
"Despite parents' concerns, young adults are completely capable and willing to set goals and work hard to achieve them," said Jonathan. "Jim and I know from first-hand experience that if you approach life the right way, you really can reach your goals and achieve your dreams, no matter what age you are."
(1) In the YesYouCan survey, parents are defined as adults 34+ who have children or grandchildren who are 18-33 years old. Adult children are defined as 18-33 year olds who are currently a student, have graduated college or technical school or attended college or technical school.
